Blennerhassett Island - October 9, 2011

The club made a trip to Blennerhassett Island on October 9. As part of the trip, members had lunch at the historic Blennerhass

ett Hotel restaurant before boarding a sternwheeler to Belpre, Ohio and

Blennerhassett Island. Blennerhassett

Island's antiquity spans back to Ice Age

hunters 9,000 years ago. Native American tribes lived on the island almost continuously, until white settlers began to flock into the Ohio Valley in the 1780s. Harman Blennerhassett, a wealthy Iris

h aristocrat, settled on the wilderness island in 1798, where he built a magnificent mansion. Designed in the Palladian style (like Mount Vernon), the house contained 7,000 square feet of floor space. Although it burned to the ground in 1811, the outside has been restored, and work continues on the inside of the mansion.

Joint trip with Taylor Co., Morgantown, and Stonewall Jackson  Camera Clubs - 10 July 2011 - We traveled to the Blackwater Falls Lodge.  Took pictures behind the lodge of the Blackwater Canyon.  Went to the left of the lodge (facing it) to the Elakala Trail.  We took pictures of Shay Run both above and below the bridge falls.  Some members went on down the trail to the second cascade to take pictures of a nicer falls than the top (bridge falls).  John Simons took pictures of the spectacular 3rd cascade - below.  This is the falls you can see from the handicapped access overlook on the opposite side of the canyon.  We all took pictures from the overlook as well.  John took pictures from the cliff at the top of Blackwater Falls (opposite the tourist platform) and from the bottom of the canyon below the falls.

Camera Club trip - October 2010 - We traveled to Coopers Rock State Park, WV to take photos of the foliage and the unusual rock formations.  We hiked quite a bit and stopped at an old iron smelting operation in the park.  Afterward, we ate at the Outback and discussed the trip.  An excellant trip!

It is situated between a 1797 gristmill and a historic stone arch bridge ( the longest single span of stone in America when built in 1813 ). Three of its six dining rooms were once part of the log stagecoach stop, Little Crossings Inn. Artisans work in various media, including: bird carving, basket making, hand-loom weaving, and hand-thrown pottery. Also produced in the village are stained glass art, hand-forged iron, hand-crafted teddy bears, and hand-crafted natural soaps. http://www.pennalps.com/.
